Reinventing one’s career

Throughout our lives’ situations arise, often unplanned, where we are forced to reinvent ourselves. Be it a change in personal circumstances or perhaps linked to an employer we work for. In all kinds of situations, we find ourselves asking ‘what next?’ The reinvention situations that inspire me most are ones which begin by statements such as: ‘there must be something better than this’. Situations where we ponder where we have come from and how we can start anew. In my life this has happened on several occasions; the passing of my brother when I was 15, getting married, having my first child, getting divorced, changing careers, having a business fail, having a business succeed to the point where I could step back and enjoy its success. And more recently retiring from business altogether. Throughout my life, I have always craved adventure, for things new. I am lucky to have an inner confidence that reassures me that, no matter what, things will be OK. Perhaps it’s naivety or maybe the stupidity symbolized by ‘The Fool’ in the Tarot? Careerwise, I learned that one of the secrets to success is to make sure I am not the smartest person in the room. To surround myself with people that are different from me. People who think differently, people with a different background and a different set of skills. I have learnt that if team members have respect for each other’s differences and we do not over-rule each other or ignore the inconvenient voice telling us something we do not like to hear, then everything is possible. How often have you had to reinvent yourself? What did you learn from the experience? What might you do differently next time? What would be your advice to someone else in a similar situation? Whatever you do, wherever you are, try and keep safe, take care of others, always be respectful and stick to what you believe to be true. I know it’s never easy but it helps, especially in times of reinvention.
